↳ Day 1: Favorite Character

I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that Peter is my favorite character. I love Peter for all the same reasons as everyone else. He’s brave, adventurous, and not to mention absolutely adorable. But I also love him because as a character, he’s incredibly complex. The 2003 live-action movie in particular does a great job of portraying how eternal youth isn’t as great as it seems. Peter, though he’s a child forever, and literally the epitome of “innocence”, is not perfectly happy. He likes to think he is, likes to think he’s living in a paradise where grown up issues will never be a problem. But he’s not. You can read more about that here if you’d like. He’s just deluding himself. Wendy is the first to realize this, when Peter yells at her that he “just wants to be a boy, and have fun“ and she responds with “You say so, but I think it is your biggest pretend.” (That’s where my url came from, actually.) This little piece of dialogue is very effective because it makes you think, “Maybe Peter’s life isn’t one that I want.” People always say they wish they lived in Neverland, they wish they could have the life that Peter has. But I don’t think they would like that very much. Peter has an incredible amount of inner turmoil. He struggles with having grown up feelings, especially after meeting Wendy. Feelings like love, feelings he doesn’t quite have words for. He’s a child, after all. And being a child, he’ll never get the full experience of life. Life, in the end, is about growing up. New feelings, new experiences, new knowledge, it’s all a part of the bigger picture. That’s why Peter says, “To live, would be an awfully big adventure.” That’s the moment when he realizes he is in fact, as Hook once put it, “incomplete.”

Peter Pan will always be one of the best characters in fiction, and the one closest to my heart. Here’s to the boy who never grew up.

Rare (and could possibly be the only set photo featuring Michael) photograph of Anthony Michael Hall on the set of Rascals and Robbers: The Secret Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. He portrayed Huck Finn in this 1982 made-for-tv adaption. Was filmed in the summer of 1981 in Natchez, Mississippi. Behind him on the porch is Cynthia Nixon!

Not sure if this can be found online to watch but I know there is a few rare VHS copies out there. Someone needs to put it online pronto!
